Roanoke, Virginia — The Roanoke community is mourning the loss of Ardell Stone, a respected dance educator, mentor, and community leader whose influence shaped generations of students over a remarkable career spanning more than five decades. Stone passed away on June 6, 2026, at the age of 85, leaving behind a legacy defined by passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to helping others reach their full potential.
For many families throughout the Roanoke Valley, Ardell Stone was far more than a dance instructor. As the founder of the Ardell Stone School of Dancing, she created a welcoming environment where young people learned not only the art of dance but also confidence, discipline, perseverance, and self-respect. Her studio became a second home to countless students who found encouragement, friendship, and inspiration within its walls.
Over 54 years of teaching, Stone earned a reputation for excellence. She believed in setting high standards and encouraging her students to strive for their very best. While her expectations were demanding, former students often recall that her guidance came from a place of genuine care. She celebrated their accomplishments, supported them through challenges, and took pride in watching them develop into confident individuals both on and off the stage.
One of the most meaningful chapters of her life was her partnership with her daughter, Lynn. Together, they spent nearly three decades teaching and mentoring young dancers while preserving the values that had become synonymous with the studio. Their shared commitment to excellence and personal growth helped establish a lasting tradition that continues to influence generations of families.
Stone’s contributions extended beyond dance education. In 2011, the Ardell Stone School of Dancing was recognized as a Small Business of the Year, a reflection of her leadership, dedication, and positive impact on the community. Her work touched thousands of lives and earned widespread respect throughout the region.
Outside the studio, Ardell was deeply devoted to her family. She was a loving mother to Lynn, Rick, and Bill, and a proud grandmother to Tyler, Taylor, and Alex. Family remained at the heart of everything she did, and she found great joy in supporting and celebrating their achievements.
She was also a faithful member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church, where she devoted her time to various ministries, including efforts to support children and families in need through the church’s Backpack Ministry.
Perhaps Ardell Stone’s greatest achievement was the community she built. Former students often returned years later with children and grandchildren of their own, creating a multi-generational legacy that reflected the profound impact she had on countless lives.
Though her final curtain has fallen, Ardell Stone’s influence continues through every dancer she inspired, every lesson she taught, and every life she helped shape. She will be remembered with admiration, gratitude, and love by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
